OVERVIEW: Second-generation LLTV submarine periscopes introduced in the 1980s–1990s provided improved nighttime surveillance with better image intensification, video clarity, and greater light sensitivity. These systems enhanced submerged situational awareness without revealing the submarine’s position.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Gen 2 LLTV-equipped submarine periscopes marked a notable improvement over first-generation models by incorporating more sensitive image intensifier tubes, better resolution, and integrated electronic controls. Designed for low-light passive surveillance, these systems delivered clearer, more detailed monochrome video images under starlight or moonlight conditions. They were often installed as a supplementary channel within the optical periscope system, enabling the operator to toggle between traditional optics and LLTV video. Though still limited compared to modern infrared systems, they extended operational capabilities for submerged reconnaissance and targeting during night operations.

ROLE SUMMARY:
Category: Electro-Optical Surveillance
Primary Use: Nighttime and low-light observation
Function: Passive visual detection using enhanced image intensification
Platform: Submarines (attack and strategic classes)
